Water makes a very good conveyor for pollutants to enter ecosystems and accumulate in organisms. Water is polluted from industry, agriculture, traffic, residences, and precipitation of air pollutants. Here is a list of major water contaminants, and in what ways they are restricted by law:
Water Pollutants Index
Water pollutants can be persistent, bio-accumulate and biomagnify. They cause damage to organisms, and can enter the human foodchain in a concentrated form.
Bisphenol A (BPA) is a raw material in the manufacturing of a broad range of plastics, such as polyesters, polycarbonates, and epoxy resins, as well as anti-oxidants for plasticizers. BPA is a synthetic estrogen, and has a wide distribution in the industry and consumption goods, including food containers.
Chemical formula: (CH3)2C(C6H4OH)2
Group: diphenylmethae derivative und bisphenol. The A in Bisphenol A stands for Aceton.
As a synthetic oestrogen, there are fears that the high doses most people are exposed to regularly could be a cause of concern for a number of health effects. Epidemiological studies are attempting to establish associations to cardiovascular disease, liver enzyme abnormalities, and testosterone levels in men.
Current recommendations of the EFSA (European Food Standards Agency) and FDA (US Food and Drug Administration): TDI (Tolerable Daily Intake) = 50 micrograms of BPA per kilogram of body mass per day.
